Academic dress or protest dress?

Sir.—lt is unfortunate that “Praeses” should feel bound to comment on one of the least important aspects of the ■recent demonstration against I American involvement in

Vietnam. The academic gowns- were worn by protesters simply as a symbol, to identify themselves in a direct and obvious way. Unlike your correspondent, we were all prepared to show ourselves without anonymity. It is a common and insidious response to such a protest, to deflect attention from the real issue. — Yours, etc., D. R. GORDON. January 9, 1973.
