Repatriation unwanted

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LUSAKA, Jan. 8.

Many of the 20,000 Je-' hovah’s Witnesses who fled to Zambia last year are believed to have committed suicide after being repatriated to Malawi late last month, the "Times of Zambia” reports. The paper quotes the acting Permanent Secretary of Zambia’s Eastern Province (Mr Samuel Kafumukache) as saying that about 800 Jehovah’s Witnesses have already trekked back into Zambia since the repatriation began on December 19. Although Zambia refuses to regard members of the sect —which has been banned in Malawi since 1967—as refugees, the Government delayed their repatriation until receiving written assurances from Malawi that they would not be harmed. The Government is expected to return the latest influx across the border as soon as possible, but it may prove difficult to trace some of the refugees, because many come from the same tribe as do some Zambians in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, and they speak the same language.
