Webb recalled to play against Pakistan
Canterbury has three fast bowlers in a group of 12 chosen for the match against Pakistan on Saturday — two of them from the country, one from the cricketing wilderness.
In the absence of the brothers Hadlee with the New Zealand team in Australia. R. C. Merrin and R. Sowden from North Canterbury have been included, and M. G. Webb, the former test bowler, will play his first game for the province. When Canterbury embarked on a policy of playing two pace bowlers only in its Plunket Shield team, Webb was omitted, but it was thought he would have been the man chosen when a third fast bowler was selected for the present match with Cen-
tral Districts. However, the position went to Merrin. Sowden, who is 22, is a former Canterbury under-23 representative. He' is also a better than useful left-hand batsman.
B. C. Irving was not available for this match, and B. G. Hadlee, who has not appeared for Canterbury this season, is in the side. It will be led, in the absence of B. F. Hastings, by M. L. Ryan, and the wicketkeeper K. J. Wadsworth, who will also be in Australia, will be replaced by last season’s representative, B. P. Isherwood.
The Canterbury team is: Ryan (captain), C. L. Bull, J. W. Burtt. P. G. Coman, R. W. Fulton, B. G. Hadlee. Isherwood. C. M. Kirk. Merrin, Sowden, D. J. Gatenby, Webb.
