Imbalance of trade
(y.Z. Press Association> WELLINGTON, Jan. 9. The new Belgian Ambassador, Mr H. Matsaert, who arrived in Wellington today spoke of a new era of cooperation between New Zealand and his country, and oi a serious trade imbalance. “Traditionally, there has been a very unfair imblance of trade between' our twe countries,” he said. “You buy from us only a quarter oi what we buy from you. We are your second-best customer for wool, and take much of your hides anc leather.” “Continental Europe is today much more open to New Zealand products than evei before,” he said. Mr Matsaert will presenl his credentials this week. He will spend as muct time as he can talking tc primary-producer groups about E.E.C. agricultural anc trade policies. “My countrymen have never forgotten what New Zealanders did for us ir World War I.” he said. “1 myself am from an area ir Belgium where your soldier; fought so well."
