Nagle all the way in P.G.A. golf
(N.Z. Press Association)
TAURANGA. K. D. G. Nagle won his fifth New Zealand P.G.A. championship at Mount Manganui on Saturday, the finish of the $13,000 tournament, played in sunshine before big galleries, being vintage and typical Nagle golf.
Nagle started the final round four strokes behind the third-round leaders, S. Ginn and W. J. Godfrey, but was quickly within striking
distance of them after birdies at the first three holes. From then on, apart from a surprise performance by J. Carter (Rotorua), it was Nagle all the way. As Ginn and Godfrey struggled to hold their form, Nagle carried through one of his famous last-round charges. But in the end, although Godfrey should have finished second equal—he missed an Bin putt on the last green— Jit was Carter who provided Nagle with the opposition. Carter, an Englishman, who has lived in New Zealand for eight years, started the day on 209, with Nagle,
and after the thirteenth hole went into an outright lead, but when he dropped a stroke at the seventeenth, Nagle took over, and with a 66 won the tournament with its §2300 first prize. Godfrey, apart from his atrocious putt on the eighteenth, did not play as well in the final round as he had throughout the first three days, and eventually finished with a 72. Ginn fared even worse, scoring a 74.
Great things were expected of the brilliant Japanese professional, T. Kono, after his second-round 65, but starting the final round only three strokes behind Ginn and God-
frey, he played some: wretched golf and finished with a 78, well down the list. One of the most pleasing aspects of the last two rounds was the form displayed by J. M. Lister. He was sadly out of touch in the first two rounds, but came right in the last two to score a 69 and a mighty 66 to finish on 280—only five strokes behind Nagle. The leading amateurs, on 288, were M. Nicholson (Tauranga) and R. Gillespie (Auckland).
Leading scores were: 275— K. D. G. Nagle (Australia). 66, 73, 70. 66. 276— J. E. Carter (New Zealand), 70, 67. 72, 67.
