The Queen today bestowed New Year Honours upon more than 1000 men and women throughout the Com-! monwealth—from eminent diplomats to the; man who washes down the Royal limousines behind Buckingham Palace. The British section of the Queen’s New Year Honours List is headed by the former New Zealand Governor-Gen-eral. Sir Arthur Porritt. who is the only life peer. He is created a baron. Prominent Britons honoured include the Conservative member of Parliament, and former Minister of Defence. Sir Duncan Sandys, and the musical conductor. S r Robert Mayer, both of whom are made Companions of Honour.
