Sir,—l have recently read; about the Suchow River which runs through Shanghai. The Government of China 1 asked the industries on its! banks to make as much use
as possible of the industrial effluents. From 51 factories: over 80,000 tons of useful chemical materials were re- \ covered in 1971 and the total! volume of effluent was re-1 duced by 26 per cent. If it is! possible for this sort of thing! to be done in State-capitalist China, whose social system is not as good as the western variety, according to some people, surely it can be done! in New Zealand, whose sys-l tem is so much better.—!
