J. R. Dowling suspended

(From Our Own Reporter) AUCKLAND. J. R. Dowling, the rider of Golden Sam in the Auckland Cup yesterday, was suspended from riding up to and including January 13 at an inquiry into the running of the $45,000 race yesterday.

Dowling was charged with causing interference to Styleman and resultant interference to Proud Arragon and Tama near the five furlong mark.

The judicial committee suspended Dowling after hearing evidence from riders concerned and after inspecting a film of the incident.

About 2 furlongs later Golden Sam was checked, and it was reported that there was a resultant severe check to First Edition. A further inquiry into the incident was adjourned until the final day of the meeting todav.

Until yesterday afternoon Dowling had planned to make a hurried trip south to ride at Invercargill today. One of his mounts would have been Bonnev Belle in the cup "With a decent run he must have won,” Dowling told "The Press” after the cup. “We were in lots of trouble behind Monty going down the back and I had just got him out one when Noel Eastwood’s horse (First Edition) stopped in a stride in front of us. 1 was in all sorts of strife then, and by the time I found some room for him it was all over. He came on to the bit going beautifully at the sly furlongs, and my hones were running pretty high then.”

Ribaldo’s rider. J. P Riordan, commented: "A great run. We were a bit unlucky. They were running very tight—no-one giving an inch—and my fellow was squeezed up along the back. Hp impressed me a lot the way he ’’ecove rn d and got back into th** race. The winner only fnok it r, ff us in the last two strides Make no mistake about it. this is a good horse, and he will be even better at Trentham.” COMMENTS The apprentice. W Robinson, had high praise for his mount. Rustler, which finished third. "A furlong and a half out I thought we had it won,” he said, "hut he just could not foot it with those older, more seasoned horses in the final pinch. It was onlv his courage that kept him going.” H. N. Rauhihi. the rider of the sixth favnnrte. Young Ida. said later: "There were too manv slow ones coming back on us. I got trapped a couple of times just when T was frx-ing to improve.” Young Ida finished eighth.

I thought he was a big chance outside the furlong, but his run ended.” D. H. Harris (Supreme Miss, ninth): "She was going well right to the furlong.
