P. C. Skoglund, attempting to win his fourth successive singles bowls title, was eliminated at the national tournament at Auckland yesterday.

He began in great, style, beating J. Sheffield (Helensville), 27-4, with only 16 ends played. In the second round, he took 19 ends to dispose of P. Syben (Maur.gakaramea) by the comfortable margin, 24-13, and then the rot set in.

An Ellerslie bowler, A. Dunning, who skipped a firstyears fours team to victory in the Auckland Bowling Centre first-year fours in 1961, dealt the first blow to Skoglund by taking his first life, 17-16.

S. C. Kennedy, aged 34, a pulp worker from Tokoroa, delivered the death blow by drawing the winning shot with his last bowl in a game which had the large crowd at the headquarters green, Remuera, on its toes. 44 two-lifers left The tournament began yesterday morning at 8.30 on 88 greens with a record field of 1408 players, and at the end of the day 44 two-lifers and 220 one-lifers remained.

W. Howat (Whakatane) was on the bank after five rounds, going down to P. I Bryant (Featherstone), 10-17, and T. P. Puklowski (Manawatu), 14-20. The world bowls lead, B. W. R. Buchan (Tui Park) the winner of the title in 1964 and again in 1965, had a bad day and was out in the fifth round to J. P. Hickey (Kawerau), 23-8, after being beaten by K. Gash (Oratia), 24-8.

H. H. J. Robson (Tokoroa) went down to the lefthanded bowler from Hutt, I. D. Whiteside, 19-15, in the second round and then to G. Banicovich (Henderson), 20-17, in the third. P. K. Clark (Karoro) goes into the second day with both lives intact as will W. R. Wilkinson (Beckenham).
