White foils Canterbury bid to build substantial lead

(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI. The lively medium-paced bowler, J. S. White, was the Northern Districts hero when the side started its Plunket Shield cricket match against Canterbury at Cobham Oval vesterdav.

Canterbury dismissed Northern Districts for 139 and seemed certain to build up a hefty first innings lead.

But White, who took four wickets in making his firstclass debut against Wellington at the week-end, took the top off the Canterbury bat-

ting. He dismissed the first four batsmen for 16 runs, and finished the innings with five for 29 runs off 9.5 overs.

His magnificent performance restricted Canterbury to a total of 179, and a lead of 40. The Northern openers, D. P. Lloyd and J. Parker, had to bat out two overs in the nine minutes before stumps when the home side started its second innings. This they did, each scoring one run.

Canterbury won the toss and sent Northern in to bat on a slightly damp pitch. Lloyd and Parker, although occasionally playing and missing, put on 37 for the opening stand before D. A. Hadlee, by far the most impressive of the Canterbury bowlers, spreadeagled Lloyd’s stumps. The Northern innings did not get back on an even keel again. J. H. Blackmore and Parker became D. A. Hadlee victims, and the skipper, B. Dunning and A. D. G. Roberts promised much but fell to the wiles of the off-spin-ner, B. C. Irving. Sensataional over R. J. Hadlee came back for a second spell just before lunch and claimed three wickets in one sensational over, to leave Northern 111 for eight, and its innings in tatters at lunch. After the break, J. W. Guy hit out and became the top scorer, with 42, before his stumps were skittled by Irving. The side was all out for 139, with the Hadlee brothers —Dayle took four wickets for 28 runs and Richard three for 35—and Irving sharing the wickets.

The free-scoring P. G. Coman waved his bat at the first ball of the Canterbury innings-—delivered by White —got the touch and the wic-ket-keeper, L. S. Mountain brought off a splendid catch. J. W. Burtt and M. L- Ryan

steadied things before Burtt was caught at point blank range by E. G. Gillott. B. F. Hastings was leg-before to White, and the Northlander followed this by clean bowling Ryan. Dunning came on, defeated C. L. Bull, and at 58 for five, Canterbury was in the toils. V. Pollard and K. J. Wadsworth pulled the innings around and when Pollard went to 28, Wadsworth found another able lieutenant in D. Hadlee.

They added 57 runs for the seventh wicket until the new ball bowler, H. Unka, came back into the attack to break the stand. The superiority of the ball over the bat during the day was almost unbelieveable in the ideal conditions. Wadsworth and Guy, with their innings of 42, were the top scorers, and in all 20 wickets fell for 320 runs. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings • D P. Lloyd b D. Hadlee .. 18 J. M. Parker lbw b D.
