Totara Maid likely in Waikouaiti Cup

Totara Maid, on her winning gallop in the Timaru Cup. will be a short-priced favourite in the Waikouaiti Cup, the first leg of the Waikouaiti Racing Club's T.A.B. double on New Year’s Dav.

The second leg is on the Toomey Memorial in which Audaciter has been selected, but like the majority of the races, form shown at Washdyke may have a jbearing on the race favourites.

Totara Maid has been raised 51b for her win at Washdyke, but this will not prejudice her prospects. The opposition looks much weaker than she encountered on Wednesday. If there is to be an upset, Queen Mellay is the one capable of doing it. The Mellay mare has been racing below her true ability, but she has had time to freshen up since racing in the Hazlett Mile at Wingatui on December 16. Ali Cat, Soberano — which is racing consistently well and was a good fourth in the Timaru Cup — El Shub, The Pines, and Kel Sabaean are due to race at Washdyke today. and their prospects or chance of starting at Waikouaiti will depend on their performances. Crusade, which graduated through hack classes in impressive style and has had little luck in the running since he entered open company, has drawn the outside in a capacity field and he may start at Wyndham.
