Miss Moras retires
At the age of 18 years, Miss Karen Moras, the Australian swimming star and former world record holder —before the rise of Shane Gould — has announced her retirement from competitive swimming. The retirement does not come as a surprise. Miss Moras lost her world 800 metres freestyle record to Miss Gould in July last year and since then has not been able to regain the sparkling form which brought her to world prominence. Illness, and an accident late last year, assisted to dampen her enthusiasm. Miss Moras had been swimming competitively for
11 years and said that swiming stars today are 13 and 14-year-olds, particularly among girls. This theory however is the opposite view of manv coaches who were at Munich, where the average age of the United States women’s team was 19 and swimmers in several of the European teams were also in their late teens or early twenties. Miss Moras feels, however. that it is time she "enjoyed a normal teenager’s life.” What remains of it.
