WATER FOR OSLO
Angrv farmer uses poison OSLO. Dec. 29. Police and militia worked desperately through Thursday night to stop the poisoning of the city's water supply by a farmer embittered over taxes Oslo health authorities said that the police had prevented a major catastrophe. Police said that they had arrested Severin Haugen aged 43, disarming him when he threatened to shoot them with a rifle.
Haugen had managed to ■ empty several barrels of a highly poisonous pesticidr i into Lake Maridal. the source lof the Norwegian capital’s drinking water that supplied half a million people, police said.
Earlier. Haugen had de manded 540,000 kroner (about .5NZ75.000) from the Primt Minister (Mr Lars Korvald) as payment for not poisoning the lake. The farmer had said he was protesting against Nor way’s "value added” tax. Health authorities said to day that the drinking watei in Oslo was quite safe. Polici said that they had withheld news of the incident during the night to avoid panic
