Assault near totem pole

A 35-year-old man was badly beaten and robbed of $l4O near the totem pole in Harper Avenue about 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The man, Mr Brian Woodfield a Christchurch resident who has been working at Twizel and who returned to Christchurch for the holidays, had earlier met his assailant in Cathedral Square. The offender, described as a European aged about 25. offered to take Mr Woodfield to a party and the two walked down Victoria Street and across to Harper Avenue where the attack occurred. Detectives believe that the assault might have taken place within view of the road and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any incident. The attacker beat Mr Woodfield unconscious and [stole the money from « pocket Mr Woodfield later hailed a taxi in Montreal Street and reported the assault to the police about 2 a.m. yesterIday. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital with suspected concussion and suspected broken ribs, and had a cut on his eyelid stitched. The assailant had shoulderlength light brown hair and was wearing a light coloured shirt and sports trousers.
