Messides likely Taranaki winner

"The Press" Special Service NEW PLYMOUTH.

Messides has been very disappointing on occasions, but she has been racing solidly lately and might win her first open handicap at New Plymouth today. Messides will contest the Walter Weston Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double on the second day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting. Messides, which is trained at New Plymouth, has thrived in receuth months and is in hard racing condition. On her day she has considerable ability and it will be very disappointing if she fails to race well against the moderate opposition she will meet today. Another New Plymouth galloper, Second Choice, should be the danger. He is a free galloper with a good deal of ability. The Hawera stablemates, Remand and Gay Dinah, might fight out the second leg, the Taranaki Hack Cup.

Remand ran a fine race for third on the first day and is in solid form. She put in a big run around the outside from the halfmile and covered a lot of extra ground. It was hardly surprising (hat she weakened a little in the final 100 yards. Gay Dinah has been racing at the Manawatu meeting. She easily beat the high-weighters there on the first day and on Saturday ran on strongly for third. She is a tough mare, but she might have difficulty in giving her stablemate 61b in weight.
