BARDALL IN FAVOUR

"The Press’’ Special Service

AUCKLAND.

The half-dozen Auckland Cup horses on show will draw most attention at Ellerslie today, yet it will be a surprise to most betters if one of them wins. Young Ida is a notable Auckland Cup candidate in the Clifforc’ Plate but she has Bardall to contend with, while in the Summer Cup the two-milers face tough opposition from Kia Marea and Pilfer.

Neither the Summer Cup nor the Clifford Plate last year provided anything of a guide to the two mile event on New Year’s Day. The Plate winner, Bardall. did not start In the zkuckland Cup. Neither did Laurel Oaks, which took the Summer Cup. Now seven years old, Bardall was a weight-for-age star through the late spring and summer last season and with the Foxbridge Plate and Queen Elizabeth (I Plate to his credit he is doing just as well again this season. He is a fine galloper and quite exceptional when it comes to racing under the weight-for-age scale.

Young Ida was slow to get going in the Christmas Handicap, over a mile, yesterday 7 before finishing fourth and she was a bit tardy at the start the time before, even though she won, a weight-for-age mile at Awapuni on December 16.

Bardall’s habit is to get into stride quickly and race freely either in front or close to the pace. In the process he has burnt off many a top galloper. Young Ida will be doing very well indeed if she is able to give him a start into the last couple of furlongs and still beat him home. With a big off-course following, the Taranaki mare. Kia Marea, will almost certainly be favour 7 ite for the Summer Cup but she will need to be right at. top form and perhaps better if she is to give 191 b and a beating to PilI fer, a Te Rapa four-year-old which shows every promise of becoming a very good stayer.

A five-year-old. Kia Marea is well known to Auckland as both a sprinter and middle-distance runner. Last season she won the A.R.C. Easter Handicap and.

’■''’fit on 'on of that, look rhe Championship Stakes, over the Summer Cup course.

Kia Marea and Pilfer are not in the Auckland Cup but First Edition is one holding his place in the field for New Year’s Day. He has 7st 91b in the Summer Cup and 31b less in the twomiler. for which, under the conditions of the programme, he could not be rehandicapped if he won today.

Once so disappointing in his. failure to race up to good train-: ling form. First Edition has taken■ ’a new lease of life since com- . ing north to join C, M. Jillings , i i stable at Takanini. At weight-! i for-age against Bardall and Ben; Adhem he managed a creditable; • fourth last time, in the Queen Elizabeth II Plate at Paeroa. The jtime before he came fourth over 111 furlongs at Ellerslie on De- ■ cember 2.
