Race over at Akaroa

The Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s planned anniversary’ ocean race from Lyttelton to Timaru has finished at Akaroa.

It was decided yesterday that the race be not continued in view of continuing southerly winds, steep seas, and a strong tidal set against the yachts. The three yachts still in the race oh Tuesday afternoon were ordered into Akaroa because of the unpromising weather forecast, and their finishing times there will now stand as the official placings.

First across the line was R. P. Keeling’s 40ft Cabana, followed about an hour later by Crusader (K. Drayton). Crusader, however, took handi-

cap honours with a corrected time of lOhr 36min, 13min ahead of Cabana. The little 24-footer Apogee (D. Triggs) crossed the line at Akaroa at 1 a.m. yesterday to take third place with a corrected time of 14hr lOmin. The two other starters in the race, Main Royal (D. Matheson) and the trimaran Lady G (G. Copland), had already withdrawn when the decision was made to make the unscheduled stop at Akaroa.

Lady G arrived back at Lyttelton yesterday with damaged sails, while Main Royal was still sheltering at Le Bons Bay until the seas dropped.
