Unbeaten Murray leads qualifiers

Only K. G. Murray (Linwood) remained unbeaten after the second day’s play yesterday in the Christmas fours tournament. With six wins, he is certain of a place in the post-section draw’.

Of the other 81 entries, 13 go into the final two rounds of section play today needing one win to qualify. A further 22 must win twice to beat the cut-off.

The five-game winners are mostly skips expected to qualify, or go close to doing so, but among those on thinner ice, with four wins to their credit, are some who were expected to make bold bids.

These include T. F. Coup (Kaiapoi), who was beaten yesterday by R, Thomson (Elmwood), the winner of only one of his previous five games, E. M. McCahon (Elmwood), who lost twice yesterday, and S. E. Lawson and L. C. Lindley (both Christchurch).

Among the better-per-formed skips now with no

chance of qualifying are W. Hayes (Belfast), D. Langley (Christchurch), S. G. Buxton (Sheffield), R. Hey (Burnham Camp), R. A. Wilkinson (Mt Pleasant) and T. F. Smee (Fendalton).

The first round of postsection play will be at Fendalton this afternoon, and not, as was reported yesterday, tomorrow morning. The final should be reached on Saturday afternoon.
