DOMINANT BATTING

Miss Cowles scores 91

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Canterbury batsman, Miss S. Cowles, brought sparkle to the opening day of the Hallyburton Johnson national women’s cricket tournament at Te Whiti Park yesterday.

She made 91 in 114 minutes, and her innings, which included 12 fours, took Canterbury to a strong position against Otago. With C. Early and L. Clough the only Otago batsmen to get on top of tight bowling, Otago was all out for 93, to which Canterbury replied with 193 for nine. Wellington, thanks to bright half centuries from B. Bevege and M. Dunlop, held the advantage in the match against Auckland. Scores:—

Otago 93 (L. Clough 25; J. Olsen 4/26, S. Rattray 2/9), Canterbury 183/9 (S. Cowles 91, E. Rouse 42, Rattray 15: B. Hely 4/34, J. Gillies 3/35). Wellington 208 (B. Bevege 55, 8.. Dunlop 51; S. Blackie 5/51), Auckland 73/5 (J. Whitcombe 20; J. Saulbrey 2/14, M. Dunlop 2/28).
