Ashley has convincing win in junior cricket

Ashley had a convincing first innings win plus bonus points against Banks Penin- ; sula in a junior representative fixture at Ohoka in the third round of the Norman Allan trophy series. Play being on a grass pitch favoured Ashley because the Banks Peninsula batsmen, accustomed to the greater consistency provided by composition pitches, had difficulty in adjusting to the ball coming through from the turf. P. Devlin and T. Bailey gave Ashley a useful start with 42 for the first wicket. This was consolidated by B. Brice and B. Inch with 88 for the third wicket and then N. Eder added a hurricane 56 late in the innings when runs j were needed quickly.

;i The score of 247 flattered ; I Ashley slightly, however, as the Peninsula fielding missed ■ several chances, while in turn •i Ashley fielding took its opi i portunities. Peninsula made a bad bat--11 ting start to be four for 17. »(Then C. Stanbury, who had ■ already impressed with his •(bowling, and P. Langrope, ■ gave Peninsula a fighting '(chance with a partnership of - 50—Stanbury with controlled j batting while Langrope hit .'(out lustily for three sixes and r four fours in his 36 against .(some tempting bowling. W. Garrick troubled most Tof the Peninsula batsmen (with his well directed fast at- > i tack, while Brice cleaned up ; two of the tailenders for nine. I Scores: — Ashley 247 (N. Eden 56. B Brice 55, B. Inch 38. T. Bailey 19, P. Devlin 18. S. Abbott 16. M. McNally 16; C. McIntosh 4/65, G. De Latour 2/49. C. Stanbury 2/41) won on the first innings from Bank Peninsula 118 (P. Langrope, 36, C. Stanbury 30. B. Turner 14. D. Bryant 12; W. Garrick 3/40, Brice 2/9).
