AUCKLAND. December 27.
The police have ordered nine videotape recorders in what is seen as the latest move to thwart demonstrators during the Springbok Rugby tour next year.
The equipment has heen ordered through an Auckland company. W. and K. McLean, Ltd. and is expected to cost about $12,000.
The company is agent for a Japanese electrical firm. The equipment—among the. first of its kind to reach New Zealand—is expected to be in police hands early in the New Year. The Commissioner of Police (Mr W. H. A. Sharp) confirmed today that the police had ordered the recorders. He said the equipment; would be used for "general; ' training purposes,” but de- j dined *c comment further on ( what use the police intended I * to make of it. Other policemen, while! ; acknowledging that the re-! corders had a wide field of: • use, said the equipment! would be invaluable for gaining evidence and identifying
troublemakers at demonstrations. The recorders are portable, and are attached to a television camera about the size, of a 16mm. movie camera.
It is believed that the police have also ordered a larger machine which will be used for editing and “blowing up” certain sections of film.
