Uganda’s ruling on Britons
(N.Z.P A Reuter—Copyright) KAMPALA. December 27. Ihe Uganda (government has ruled that Britons leaving ihe country before the end of this month will be granted a much-reduced emigration allowance, according to informed sources in Kampala.
President Amin announced a week ago that members of ; British aid staffs who wished to terminate their contracts i would have to leave by Dec- I ember 31. and under the
same conditions as the expelled non-citizen Asians. The Asians were allowed to transfer just over £5O in foreign currency compared with the normal emigration
allowance of nearly £3OOO (They were also limited to 200 ! kilogrammes of personal ! effects worth not more than [about £5OO. Normally, there is no limit lon the amount of personal • effects emigrants from [Uganda may take with them. After talks last week between the acting British High Commissioner (Mr Harry Brind) and the Uganda Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs, it was agreed • that Britons affected by the December 31 deadline would receive the full allowance. The sources in Kampala say that this ruling has now been revoked and that mem bers of British aid staffs [terminating their contracts will be limited to the same !amounts of money and per-
effects as Asians. ,! About half the Britons -affected received the full emigration treatment before lithe new ruling was made, and Jhave since left for Britain. i Another 30 or 40 emigrants, including their families, still : I have to leave by the end of I the month.
