Wheat prices in 1973

The basic price for wheat harvested next year will be higher than for the last harvest. The general manager of the Wheat Board, Mr L. C. Dunshea, said this week that following the increase of 5c per bushel in the basic price for the last harvest, a further increase of 5c for the 1973 harvest was announced last March, making the basic price for the harvest, which will begin shortly, $1.55 for wheat of milling standard quality. The 25c per bushel premium for Hilgendorf will be continued, making the price for this wheat $l.BO per bushel. The discount on Arawa has been increased to 20c per bushel, making the Arawa price $1.35 per

bushel, while the discount on Kopara has been reduced to 5c per bushel, so that it will be worth $1.50. According to an announcement this week from the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Freer, 6c per bushel will again be retained from growers’ payments in the coming harvest to cover any costs or losses incurred in the disposal of surplus wheat. The retention is the same as was made last harvest, and Mr Dunshea said this week that the full 6c had not been expended in the export of the 30,000 tons of wheat this year and the small part of it that was left would be returned to growers early next year after the season’s transactions had been completed.
