Corroboree favoured
"The Press" Special Service \ AUCKLAND. Great Northern Derby horses and good sprinter-milers In their preliminaries for Ellerslie next week will be attracting close attention at the Waipa Racing Club's mating tomorrow.
Corroboree, Gold Ducat and Manchero are foremost of the Derby candidates and all should do well.
. Corroboree will be tackling the open milers In the Rose Town Mlle this time, with the likes of Kalgoorlie, Montel and Kia Marea to contend with; Mancliero and Gold Duct are rivals for the Pirongia Handicap, an intermediate 10 furlongs. Even against such tormidable opponents, Corroboree should be in the running of the Rose Town Mile. He has an abundance of pace and, with 7-9, is in receipt of plenty of weight from the best of the older horses. Corroboree has failed to win since he took the Great Northern Guineas in such good style, but he has raced well most times. He seems to have thrived through it all and yesterday morning looked in great order when galloping at Takanini. A Taranaki mare on her way to Ellerslie for the big mile events at the Auckland Cup meeting, Kia Marea looked to be nearing good form again when fourth, two starts back, over 11 furlongs at Otaki. She failed meanwhile, at weight-for-age, but is probably better suited by handicap conditions. Kia Marea won the last A.R.C. Easter Handicap with 8-1. She has 81b more on Saturday, but that will not be as much to her disadvantage as her extremely wide barrier position. It will be surprising if Kia Marea does not have to cover much extra ground. Kalgoorlie is also out wide at the start, but he is such a brilliant customer that he will very likely outrun most to the first turn and get pretty close to the inside.
Kalgoorlie and Monte) both won over six furlongs in their last outings, Kalgoorlie at Paeroa and Montel at Te Aroha. Six or seven furlongs is probably Kalgoorlie’s best distance. Montel looks all over as tough. She would appreciate a mile or, perhaps, further. Timon, an acceptor for the A.R.C. Christmas Handicap as well, is another good one in the Rose Town Mile and Laurelville too helps add to the strength of the field.
