Cheap lettuces and cabbages
Lettuces and cabbages were selling cheaply, as were apples and pears, at Christchurch produce markets this week. Cabbages have benefited from recent rain, and are of excellent size; they sold from J4c to 19c each in shops. Lettuce retailed up to 18s each.
Sturmer apples were of good quality for this time of year, and P. Barry and Winter Cole pears also met a firm market. Pears sold from 9c to 14c per lb. Among salad vegetables, tomatoes sold between 39c and 59c per lb. and cucumbers fetched between 18c and 25c each. Recent weather has not helped the ripening of salad produce, and quality is variable.
Christmas lilies were popular, selling from 3c to 5c a bloom in the markets. Strawberries, another popular Christmas purchase, had increased in price from last week and sold between 49c and 69c a chip. Australian oranges were also selling well in shops. Other retail prices were: Capsicums, $1.25 to $1.49 per lb; spring onions, 15c to 26c a bunch; radishes, 9c to 14c a bunch; spring marrows, to 14c per lb; fresh green peas, 10c to 25c per lb; cauliflowers, 24c to 39c each; new potatoes, to 8c per lb; raspberries, 69c a chip; boysenberries, to 69c a chip; watermelons, 20e to 24c per lb; cherries. 55c to $l.lO per lb; peaches, 17c to 39c per lb; apricots, 45c to 59c per lb; plums, to 35c per lb; grapefruit, 19c to 27c per lb; pineapples, $1.40 each; imported apples, 31c per lb; pumpkins, to 21c per lb; carrots, 14c to 19c a bunch.
