Air-freight meat plan

(K.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PERTH, Dec. 19. Meat exporters in Western Australia are giving serious consideration to a proposal to export lamb and quality beef by air. They hope to beat a proposed 24.9 per cent increase j in shipping costs and cater for markets in Britain and Japan with chilled goods. The chairman of the Western Australia Meat Exporters’ Association (Mr A. J. Webster) said the association was to hold discussions with an air-chartering broker in Perth today after a proposition from the broker to use Boeing 707 s to beat the shipping costs—particularly of seasonal meats. Consignments of about 40 tons could be flown from Perth each week, taking good quality beef and lamb to overseas markets in a few hours, said Mr Webster.
