SCOTT BASE THAW
(Special Crspdt N Z PA) SCOTT BASE, Dec. 21. Rising summer temperatures in the Antarctic are spoiling the chances of a white Christmas for New Zealanders at Scott Base. As the thermometer hovers just above zero, snow around the base is thawing to reveal rock, and the only New Zealanders likely to have a white Christmas will be those in the field. A Christmas tree flown from New Zealand is now in the dining hall of the base. The cook, Mr J. Halewood, of Blenheim, has baked several cakes and is working on his Christmas dinner menu.
The postmaster, Mr L. Price, of Nelson, has been preparing a special radio schedule so that the men can speak to their families on Christmas Day. A United States Navy Hercules is flying Christmas mail and gifts south. They will be taken by dog sledge from Williams Field to Scott Base.
This year Father Christmas wlil be played by the base engineer, Mr J. Housiaux, of Otaki. He will distribute the cargo. New Zealanders working in the field will receive their mail by helicopter.
