WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. The National Development Council's cultural council thinks that the adoption of a distinctive New Zealand flag and anthem is an appropriate subject lor public debate aiid discussion, the council's chairman (Mr W. N. Sheat) said today. He said that the cultural council discussed at its second meeting the desirability of New Zealand having its own national flag and anthem. Members felt the tbne was now right to consider adopting a flag and an linthem which would be distinctively New Zealand's own. They had noted that a public opinion poll on kn anthem had shown that 53 per cent of the New Zealanders polled favoured adopting “God Defend New Zealand"; 31 per cent favoured retaining “God Save The Queen": and 18 per cent did not express a clear opinion.
