Korean violinist at festival
A young Korean violinist, Kyung-Wha Chung, will make two appearances at the Christchurch Arts Festival in March next year.
Mr G. R. Lascelles, the deputy chairman of the festival, said yesterday that the violinist’s debut with the London Symphony Orchestra two years ago was one of the most impressive European debuts for many years. Within three days of it, she had been offered 30 concerts in Britain, with most of the leading orchestras. She signed a contract with Decca records, and her first
record of the Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concertos was a bestseller.
Kyung-Wha Chung, with Pinchas Zukerman, jointly won the Leventritt competition in the United States.
Kyung-Wha Chung was bom in Seoul, the youngest daughter in a family of seven, and from the age of 13 she studied at the Juilliard School in New York.
"She is a performer of the utmost brilliance and refinement who combines a dazzling technique with temperament and taste. The sweep of her performances has impressed all who have heard her, and festival audiences will be fortunate to hear a musician, who, by common consent, is one of the greatest contemporary violinists,” Mr Lascelles said.
