Nudity on beaches
(N.Z. Press Association f WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. The Attorney-General (Dr Finlay) says he does not object to nudists “doing their thing” on New Zealand beaches. If other people did not like it, the obvious answer was for them to stay away from nude bathers, he said. Dr Finlay was being questioned on the television programme “Gallery” tonight on his attitude to nude bathing. “I don’t regard it as offensive,” he said. “I don’t go for it myself — largely, I must confess, because I’m not suitably equipped for Dr Finlay admitted he had swum nude himself—and found it quite pleasant. But he said he was acutely conscious when he got out that he was “no great ornament on the horizon.” Dr Finlay said he was agreeable to the removal of any barriers to nudists swimming together on beaches. The law might be amended, if necessary, to enable local bodies to designate certain areas for nude bathing. Notices could be put up saying it was an area for nude bathing. “People should be allowed to do what seems a reasonably natural thing,” Dr Finlay said.
