A TRUST REPAID

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 14. The bonds of friendship between New Zealand) soldiers who served on Crete and the inhabitants; of the island were em-l bodied this week in the person of Miss Argiro Vrondulaki.

The attractive 24-year-old arrived at Auckland Airport for a two-month holiday in New Zealand, arranged by the Rotorua branch of the Crete Veterans’ Association. The secretary’ (Mr E. Hayward) said the branch decided seven years ago to “justify its existence.” So it wrote to the Mayor of Canea, on Crete, suggesting that they sponsor some worthy child through university. The suggestion was quickly accepted, and Miss Vrondulaki was selected as the recipient when she became dux of her school. At a cost to the Rotorua Crete veterans of $9BO a year, she studied for seven years at the School of Architecture in Salonika, Greece. She graduated this year and is now a fully qualified architect. In halting English, she said at the airport that she found it hard to find words to thank her sponsors enough. “They trusted me,” she said. “It has been something great to me.” Without their generosity she would have found it extremely difficult to find the money to attend university.

Open Day at the Christchurch City Council’s creche in Cathedral Square did not attract as many members of the public as was hoped. The day was intended as an opportunity for the public to look over the facilities available at the creche and the improvements made in the last year. The photographs shows Mr and Mrs M. Taverndale, with their two children, Nigel (left), and Victoria. They are some of the 30 or 40 children the creche has been caring for daily.
