Adios Adieu is favoured for Rangiora Cup
By
G. K. Yule
Adios Adieu is expected to qualify for the SSOOO Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day with a win in the Rangiora, Cup, over two miles, tomorrow. He and six others share the back mark of 24 yards, and all will be striving to earn a start in the Ashburton race, which is the richest 2:13-class event on the calendar.
Owned in Southland by Mr J. J. Holland, and trained for him at Methyen by C. V. and T. M. May, Adios Adieu is one of the most improved pacers in Canterbury today. He has had only nine starts this season for two wins, five seconds and a fourth and, with a little better fortune, his record would have been even better. He won impressively at his latest start, at Addington Raceway on December 2, when he beat many of the
horses down to oppose him tomorrow. The ease with which he won that race was a highlight of the night and suggests that his handicap of 24 yards will not prove an insurmountable assignment. Two starts back he looked desperately unlucky when he finished a close second to Local Rose in the Geraldine Cup as he received a shocking run over the first mile. The May stable will have a second representative in the race in Stroll Away, another close to
form. He will be at fairly long odds, but will by no means be one of the lesser chances. However, it is from Royal Twinkle and Sherwood Em that most opposition to Adios Adieu may come. Royal ' Twinkle made an overdue re’turn to winning form on De- ’ cember 2 from behind the 1 mobile barrier. She is beginf’ning quite safely from a stand and has stamina superior to that of many in the race. ' Sherwood Em finished sec- - ond to Adios Adieu a fort- ’ night ago and will meet him ! on 24 yards more favourable terms. She is quite capable of J a solid two miles, and along ; with Ar Miss, Garrison 1 House. Jack Margon, Excel- ’ lence, Shakey Valley, and Te Kao she appeals most of the ■ horses on the limit. Individual and Local Rose are two others on 24 yards entitled to consideration in a fairly open field. , Robin’s Sister, Grosvenor ■ Globe and Newport Tryax 1 ; form a likely trio for the seci’ond leg, the President’s Handicap, a race in which the (chances of Jillinda, Radiant ’ Royal, Uira, and Russley John are also highly rated. ' However, Robin’s Sister, I which will be racing on her ; home track, will probably be . favourite after a runaway win lover 10 furlongs at Waimate la week ago.
