for ' every change of lights tried to sneak into the forbidden part of the Square, and I have no doubt that many others would also have done so had there been no traffic officer on duty. At Worcester Street,’ plenty of traffic — particularly twowheelers — would have headed north past Warners Hotel had there not been a traffic officer redirecting them. And for every driver redirected, I would suggest that several were reminded of the change or dissuaded from going against it just by the officer’s presence. Perilous walk I also think that one does not have to watch the wanderings of pedestrians about the Square at peak times for long to gain the strong impression that attempts to provide a pedestrian precinct and a vast bus terminal in the same area cannot but create considerable dangers. The one and only crossing now provided across the still-open roadway in the Square itself — that outside Warners Hotel — is used by only a small percentage of the pedestrians who have to cross the roads in use.
