“MAN OF MATCH” AWARD TO OPENER Turner leads Otago to six-wicket victory

(New Zealand Press Association)

NELSON. The New Zealand opening batsman. G. M. Turner, showed his world class in leading Otago to victor}’ over Central Districts in a semi-final of the Motor Corporation knock-out cricket tournament yesterday.

Turner scored a delightful 73 not out and won the “man of the match” award.

He held the innings together and shared an 81-run partnership with the young wicket-keeper, W. Lees, who again hit the winning runs for Otago and made an exciting 53 not out. Chasing Central Districts’ 182, Otago got the runs with three overs to spare. Turner’s innings was all grace and timing, and Lees hit the only two sixes of the match. FOOLISH RUN-OUTS

county, Hampshire, was the most impressive Central bowler. A. D. Jordan also bowled well and worked up a fast pace, particularly in his last spell. O’Sullivan conceded only 21 runs and even had Turner applauding his ability after one over. But O’Sullivan was one of the guilty Central batsmen when he was foolishly run out, along with L. Cairns and J. H. Howell. Best of the Otago bowlers was Congdon, who foxed the Central batsmen with his i variation and control. CENTRAL DISTRICTS P. Coutts c Turner b Congdon 18 ID.
