Whales’ hit parade
Dr Roger Payne played some recent recordings of the singing of hump-backed whales in the 8.8. C. domestic radio programme. New Worlds. The interviewer commented that the noise was not as interesting as in recent recordings. “Hump-backed whales change their song each year,” explained Dr Payne. "The songs we played last t : *ne I was with you here were recorded in about 1963 or 1964, but since then the song has been changing each year, though during the year everybody sings the same song—his own variation. Sort or a hit tune. “And I frankly agree with vou that the ones sung in the ‘sixties were more beautiful than the ones which are sung right now.”
