Water skiing memorial

The first event for a trophy commemorating a former national water ski champion will be contested at Lake Tekapo today and tomorrow. The South Island open and handicap slalom tournament will also incorporate the first stages of the contest for the Kevin Fowler Memorial Gold Star Trophy. Kevin Fowler died from a brain tumour last year, and his family gave the trophy, which will be contested over the Lake Tekapo championships, at Wanganui, the national championships and regional championships. As far as the Lake Tekapo tournament is concerned, the second and third heats will be the qualifying races for trophy points. About 40 entries are expected for the tournament, among them P. Bartley (Auckland), a national representative last year; T. Fowler (Wanganui), a brother of the late former champion; and Janet Cairney, the national women’s slalom champion, from Canterbury. The handicap winner will be decided on the three heats, and as a result of these heats, eight men and six women will go through to the final for the open championship. Two of the heats will be today, the remaining heat and the final tomorrow.
