‘Mother’ to schoolboys

After 19 years as matron of the Rangiora High School hostel, Mrs C. M. Bell-Syer will retire at the end of the school year this week. A South African by birth, Mrs Bell-Syer came to the hostel from Nelson in 1953 and has been there ever since. “She has been an absolute marvel over there. The hostel is not big enough to have two matrons as some schools do and as a result she has had to carry the whole load herself. She has been a real mother to the youngsters,” said the school’s principal (Mr T. M. Penny). About 60 boarders stay at the hostel during the school year. Of these about 25 are replaced as senior pupils leave and junior pupils arrive.

Old boys of the hostel held a collection for Mrs BellSyer and presented her with a nest of tables and a cheque at a farewell function on Tuesday.
