Five-mile time season’s best
The five-mile races continue to go the rounds at English Park. Last evening, in the track cycling programme, R. M. G. A. Heyde won in very fine fashion the fastest race over the distance this season. The time of lOmin 33.55ec was one of the fastest on the track since G. B. J. Fitzgerald set the then-New Zealand record—ln what was virtually a special attempt—at lOmin 3.4 sec in 1967. The race never lacked action, as attack followed attack. J. H J. Chesmar was particularly prominent, and he broke away with seven laps to ride, with G. McG. Strahl, A. D. Morris and J. Schriek. They were overhauled, and there were other bids. Then, with two laps and a half to ride, Morris attacked, Heyde and P. A. Jesson went with him, but Heyde, strangely at the time but wisely in the event, drew back with Morris. Then Chesmar made his last attempt 200 yards from the bell, but was caught by Heyde, with M. W. Litolff and Schriek in close attendance. But neither could pass Heyde. This was easily the highlight
o of the night, although the fast t. conditions were underlined by g K. W. Reid twice breaking 30sec, e of a handicap, in novice quartere mile races, and all the halfe miles, in the amateur A grade, being in the region of 59sec or s better. k Results:— n AMATEUR t- Scratch.—A grade 1000 metres: J.
