Applications for shops

The Lands and Survey Department has received applications from 17 businessmen for a block of eight shop sites in the Free Block at Boon Hay. When applications closed yesterday there had been applications from three butchers, two dairy owners, two greengrocers and three supermarkets, among others. The department will conduct a ballot on a date to be fixed The shop sites are at the corner of Rowley Avenue and McCarthy Street. They vary in size from 6.4 perches to a large site of 19 perches designated for use as a supermarket. There is provision for a mutual right-of-way 12ft wide at the rear of the sites. The department will hold the ballot after considering applications in detail. There was also considerable interest in building sections for sale in the Lewis Pass area. There were 20 applications for the eight sections. They will be allocated by ballot next Friday.
