Dispute settled

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. The dispute over the number of motormen in the new Cook Strait ferry Arahanga was settled on an interim basis today. The Railways Department and the Seamen’s Union agreed during talks with the Chief Industrial Mediator, Mr J. D. Gibb, that for two months from today two additional motormen will be employed on the ship. The men will be on articles but will not be accommodated in the Arahanga. During the two-month period the dispute will be referred to an independent arbiter to determine the ship’s engine-room manning. The arbiter will fee agreed on by both the Railways and the union within 14 days of the signing on of the two additional motormen. Introduction of the Arahanga on the Cook Strait service has been delayed a week by the dispute. The Railways wanted four motormen on the ship, the union sought six.
