Mr C. H. Griffin dies at age of 78
(NZ. Press Association) NELSON, December 4. A former managing director of Griffin and Sons, Ltd, Mr Charles H. Griffin, died in Nelson yesterday. He was 78. Mr Griffin was bom in Nelson in July, 1894. He joined Griffin and Sons in 1913. a biscuit and confectionery firm founded by his grandfather in 1865. He served in France in World War 1 from 1916, and on his return rejoined the firm. He became the general manager on the retirement of his father in 1931, and the managing director in 1950.
He lived in Lower Hutt after the establishment of Griffin’s biscuit manufacturing there in 1938. Mr Griffin retired in October, 1957, after which he returned to live in Nelson. He was a director of a number of companies, including Scoular and Company, Wellington, and Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd, Christchurch. He was the chairman of Central Motors, Ltd. Nelson from its establishment in 1931 until it was acquired by Wright Stephenson and Company, Ltd, in 1961. Mr Griffin is survived by his wife, a son, and a daugh ter.
