Caste system condemned
I ! (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) • NEW DELHI, Nov. 26. The Indian Prime Minister! i(Mrs Gandhi) has said! (that the caste system, and! j particularly the treatment ■ given to Harijans (Untouchables), was causing incalculable damage to the country. ; “No matter what its justification at the time of its ; origin at the dawn of history, the system has to be demollished,” she said during a Parliamentary debate on the position of Untouchables and tribal people. ; Mrs Gandhi said that she had no words to express her ! revulsion at frequent reports of Harijans being burned ■ alive by high-caste Hindus, or of Harijans being subjected to “some other equally- ; heinous tyranny,” and she added: “The evil can be squashed only by a wholesale change of attitude in Indian society.” A former Government Minister, Mr B. S. Murthy, said (that there was no state in ■ India where Harijans and other low-caste people were not frequently burned alive, their women raped, and their ■ property looted.
