Seven National losers

Seven National members of Parliament who sought re-election on Saturday were defeated. Among them were Mr Maclntyre, the Minister of Lands and Minister for the Environment, and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Agriculture (Mr A. D. Dick).

The other five were Mrs E. Tombleson (Gisborne), Mr H. C. Templeton (Awarua), Mr J. G. Chewings (Invercargill), Mr W. G. Tolhurst (Wanganui), and Mr J. M. Rose (Otago Central). Mr Maclntyre first entered Parliament iiT’l96o when he won the Hastings seat, previ-

ously held by Labour, by a majority of 300 votes. In 1963 this margin was increased to 1944 and Mr MacIntyre became Minister of Lands in the new Cabinet. In the following years several more portfolios were assigned to him, including Minister of Forests, Maori and Island Affairs, Minister in charge of the Valuation Department and, more recently, the newly-created post of Minister for the Environment. Mr Dick, who lost the Oamaru seat, became a member of Parliament in 1962 when he won a by-election for Waitaki, as the Oamaru electorate was then known. He retained the seat in the 1963, 1966, and 1969 General Elections after which he became a Parliamentary Undersecretary. His earlier Parlia-.

mentary posts included chairmanship of the education committee and membership of the local bills and fishing committees. Mrs Tombleson defeated the sitting Labour member for the Gisborne electorate in 1960 and the next year was a member of the special caucus committee on corporation control of radio and television. She was a member of the Select Committee on the Fishing Industry and in 1965 was leader of the New Zealand delegation to the InterParliamentary Union conference in Ottawa, Canada. Mr Tolhurst won Wanganui, then a Labour seat, in the 1969 election and Messrs Templeton, Rose and Chewings also became membersLof Parliament in 1969 by retaining National-held seats,
