Ustinov, soldier
“I took one look at myself in the mirror and came to certain conclusions — cunningly. First of all the greatcoat I was wearing reached down to the ground, as it came off the peg. I looked already a little bit strange.
“I took the cap badge off, so that I had a beret then with nothing on it. I wore glasses all the time, which I didn’t need, with a strained look. I smoked a cigarette out of a thin holder, and I carried an empty briefcase.
“The result was that I saluted nobody, but Poles of all ranks saluted me.” — Peter Ustinov talking to Michael Parkinson on the latter’s 8.8. C. television show about an episode in his Army life during World War 11.
