HAMILTON, Nov. 17.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk), last evening lost half of his tie but gained a substantial donation to his campaign funds. It is believed that Mr Kirk was presented with $lOOO by a customer in a Hamilton hotel where he was staying. Shortly before, Mr Kirk agreed to join the “Hamilton tie club.” A quick lop with a pair of scissors and the lower part of Mr Kirk’s tie joined those of about 20 prominent Hamilton businessmen on the wall of the hotel’s house bar.
While the club’s president, Mr G. W. Grigg, carefully held the maroon, export kiwi - emblazoned tie, the club “watcher,” Mr S. Whyte, cut off the lower portion.
The “club” began only recently when one businessman involuntarily gave the bottom half of his tie. Since then the ranks
have swelled as other businessmen have been coerced into joining—some of them unaware of the fact until the scissors had done their work. Mr Kirk gave his tie willingly, as did some of those in his supporting party.
