Player, putted his way to a first-round lead in the $24,000 Brazil Open golf tournament, carding a four-under-par 65 on Rio’s short but deceptive Gavea Golf Club course. D. McClelland (Britain) was two strokes behind on 67. C. Thorpe and S. Melnyk (both United States) and J. Quinteros (Argentina) were tied for third, with even-par 695.
