Oil pollution

Sir,—-I had long been under the impression that any firm convicted of discharging effluent into a stream would be faced with a heavy fine. My surprise on reading that a major oil company had been fined $75 for this offence was equalled only by my indignation. If the figure of $75 is not a misprint for $7500, then this will act as a great incentive to polluters and potential polluters of our national waterways. — Yours, etc.,

JOHN A. FORSTER. November 15, 1972.
