Pig entries 'a credit’
About 150 pigs over eight months old were appraised yesterday and were commended by the judge, Mr R. Jeffrey, of Tauranga. Mr Jeffrey said there were no entries of poor quality and that all pigs were a credit to their exhibitors.
On selecting the Large White sow of Mr A. C. and Mrs C. S. Blakely of Motukarara, as supreme champion pig of the show, he described the entry as one of the finest of its breed in the country. The supreme champion was finally selected from the other champions for its balance, strength of character and longer top line. The 22 mature Large White sows from which the supreme champion had earlier been selected as champion were all considered worthy entries. “These would be the finest I have seen in a long time,’’ Mr Jeffrey said. The champion boar of the show was a Landrace exhibited by Mr G. F. Timperley, of Coutts Island.
Mr Jeffreys praised the quality of both Landrace and Berkshire sows and boars. He commented that the number of Tamworth entries was small, though of a generally high standard. He said he was looking for sound feet and legs, good teat placement on both sows and boars, along with the general character and balance of entries.
Judgment is for carcase quality and breed character rather than preparation, he said. Younger pigs and sows with litters will be judged today.
