Area study for S.I. “quake A serious earthquake in the South Island and the problems it would pose in handling large numbers of casualties will be the main theme of the annual conference of South Island civil defence controllers, at Lincoln College next week. More than 130 will attend jthe conference, the main aim of which will be to examine jthe casualty plan of all local authorities in relation to their associated hospitals, medical and para-medical resources. For the purpose of the discussion, it will be assumed that one in every 200 inhabitants is killed, up to 2| per cent seriously injured, up to 5 per cent with minor injuries, and 15 per cent of the population homeless. Further suggested compli-: cations will be blocked : streets, communication dis- > truptions, power failure, a' failure of rail and road ser-j vices, and a breakdown in 1 water supply and sewage disi posal.
