Big bulk storage tank being built

A 493,000-gallon bulk storage tank is being built near the BP (N.Z.), Ltd, installation at Lyttelton by Sinclair Melbourne, Ltd, to the order of 1.C.1. (N.Z.), Ltd. The tank, which is 24ft high and 60ft in diameter, will be used to hold methanol (a dangerous cargo), used for manufacturing formaldehyde, which is used mostly to produce various resins for the timber industry.

The Japanese tanker Koa Nani due this week-end with a methanol cargo, will use a tank owned by Mobil OU (N.Z.), Ltd. * * * Only 150 men were required for waterfront work at 7 a.m. yesterday, leaving a surplus of 486 men. The Dutch cargo liner Loire Lloyd was not fully manned, however, as she is waiting on wool for Continental ports. She is also loading refrigerated cargo. • * * Just behind Lyttelton’s ageing post office in Norwich Quay, is a plain stone monument about sft high. It marks the former edge of the sea, and on it is inscribed: “The first settlers of the Canterbury Association—known as the Canterbury Pilgrims—landed somewhere near this spot on December 16, 1850.” To further emphasise this location. the Canterbury Hotel, on the other side of the post office, has a mural showing the First Four Ships on its wall, and a "Four Ships Bar" in Norwich Quay.
